Choose TickTick if…

  • You want a fast, inexpensive list with habits, Pomodoro and an Eisenhower view.
  • Native mobile apps are a must today.

Choose Needt if…

  • Your list is fine but your days are not, and you want each task placed on the calendar.
  • You want the plan to rebuild when meetings move.
  • You want docs, moodboards and email-to-task next to your schedule.
Why people look for a TickTick alternativeThe free plan caps you at 9 lists and 99 tasks per list, and tasks do not place themselves into free time, so the list grows while the calendar stays empty.

Who TickTick is great for

TickTick is one of the best value to-do apps around. Habits, a Pomodoro timer and an Eisenhower matrix come built in, the native apps are fast, and Premium is $49.99 a year. If you mostly need a reliable list and a timer, TickTick is hard to beat on price.

Where TickTick wins:

  • Price. Premium costs $9 a year less than Needt Pro.
  • Native apps everywhere. Needt's native mobile apps are still in development.
  • Built-in Eisenhower view and Pomodoro.

Where people get stuck

The free plan stops at 9 lists and 99 tasks per list. That is plenty at first and tight a year in.

The bigger issue is the gap between list and day. A to-do list tells you what exists. It does not tell you when. Tasks with no slot drift, due dates pile up on Friday, and you re-sort by hand every morning.

Picture Thursday: 11 tasks are due, you have four meetings, and about three free hours. TickTick shows all 11 as due today. It cannot tell you that only five fit, or which five. You find out at 18:00. A scheduler finds out at 08:00 and moves the rest to Friday before you start.

How Needt differs

  1. Every task gets a time. Add an estimate and Needt places it around meetings, before the deadline.
  2. Energy-aware. Heavy tasks go to your sharp hours, light ones to the afternoon dip.
  3. Calendar, docs and email in one place. Connect Google, Outlook, iCloud or CalDAV, plus Gmail, Outlook or IMAP mail.

An example day

Alex's list has 23 open tasks. Six have deadlines this week. Needt places quarterly invoice, 30 min, by Wed #Clients at 09:00, shop photos, 2h, high energy #Shop at 10:00, and a 25-minute focus session for Spanish flashcards at 15:30, around three meetings from Google Calendar. The other 17 tasks wait in the list until their turn.

Still like the matrix? The Eisenhower template works in Needt's Kanban view.
